Have you been a “Free Radical” Lately?

I love the spirit of New year; specially the few days spent in anticipation of the same. Those few days with all the extended holidays thrown-in are a perfect time to reflect and reconnect with yourself. This is also the time when a lot of us catch up on all that we wanted to do , but had little time like holidays, books, family and everything which lifts the spirits high.

While going through an interesting read , I came across a technical word called “Free Radical” , and my curiosity took over. Being a student of commerce I have never really studied science but thanks to the technology era , google takes you on the road less travelled in less than .32 seconds. So I was off , reading curiously about what a free radical is all about.  Broadly speaking – A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. Free-radicals-oxygenWhile a few free radicals such as melanin are not chemically reactive, most biologically-relevant free radicals are highly reactive.

Wow, the world of science was sure interesting; but clearly my imagination got the better of me and I was wondering how many of us “Humans” behave as free radicals?. Simply reacting to every stimulus. In the process not just impacting others but also your ownself. Like the free radicals atoms , these unpaired electrons make free radicals highly chemically reactive towards other substances, or even towards themselves.

On a deeper reflection , one would relate to the fact that

  1. Most of us tend to behave like free radicals
  2. Not all reactions are necessarily negative in nature
  3. Some really amazing possibilities happened because we were free radicals !
  4. And yet, there are a few which we could “respond” better than react.
On further “scientific” reading , I understood that most radicals are reasonably stable only at very low concentrations in inert media or in a vacuum.  What an analogy for humans and their search for inner-stability; mostly of us finding it in solace , peace and meditation (an inert media and vacuum indeed)!!!
Not too bad , there is so much of social science one could connect to while understanding the science of nature. It sure was a Sunday well spent with my free radicals being pleasantly active.
Now its your turn to answer this question – Have you been a “free radical” lately ?
